Florida State University Program in Medical Sciences (PIMS) Graduates

The Program in Medical Sciences (PIMS) provided the foundation upon which the Florida State University College of Medicine was built. Originally funded with a National Institutes of Health grant, PIMS was created in 1970 as an expansion program of the University of Florida College of Medicine to address the need for more physicians in rural areas of Northwest Florida. Students completed one year of medical sciences at Florida State, then completed their M.D. studies in Gainesville. During its 30 years, the program expanded to seek students from not just rural areas but a variety of backgrounds that were considered to be underrepresented in medicine. Building on the PIMS philosophy, the FSU College of Medicine believes that character and motivation to serve are essential factors to consider in the admissions process. Those with the greatest commitment to serve are most likely to become the competent and compassionate physicians Florida and the United States need most.
