Job Description
Dr. Stavros coordinates the emergency medicine curriculum and training of third- and fourth-year medical students at the Pensacola Regional Medical School Campus. He also serves as the Education Director for Emergency Medicine for the College of Medicine.
Biosketch
Dr. Stavros is board certified in both Emergency Medicine and Addiction Medicine and is a fellow for the American College of Emergency Medicine and for the American Society of Addiction Medicine. He was awarded the Air Force Health Professions Scholarship and received his Medical Degree at Creighton University. He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at St. Vincent’s Emergency Medicine Residency Program in Ohio. Following clinical training, Dr. Stavros was stationed at Eglin Air Force Base, where he practiced as an emergency physician and served as EMS director and medical director. After his honorable discharge in 2000, he continued to work as an emergency physician in the Panhandle of Florida and Mississippi.
He served as the medical director in the Emergency Department at West Florida Hospital in Pensacola for many years and continues to work there clinically. He serves as faculty for FSUCares, a mission-oriented organization that annually takes medical students to underserved populations to provide medical care. He received the Avaya Small Business Award for a project that utilized telemedicine to provide care to a rural village in the country of Panama. Dr. Stavros was honored as the 2016 National Frist Humanitarian Award recipient by HCA (Hospital Corporation of America) which employs over 40,000 physicians worldwide. He was also awarded the Pioneer Award in Healthcare from the Pensacola Area Chamber of Commerce for his recent medical work during the pandemic.
He is the medical director of the EMT/Paramedic program at Pensacola State College. In addition, he has been an instructor in ATLS, PALS, ACLS and ITLS and has served as EMS medical director for two large services. In his role as an addiction medicine physician, he has served as medical director of Access Recovery Solutions, Community Medical Services, Twelve Oaks and Gulf Coast Addiction Medicine focused on the treatment of patients in the community and those in the prison system dealing with addiction. He has active jail programs that provides addiction services to incarcerated patients. He serves as Chief Medical Officer for Maric Healthcare that provides treatment for patients suffering from opioid addiction. He serves as a Territory Medical Director for Community Medical Services which treats patients with opiate addiction in 13 states. He has served as an ad hoc Florida Statewide Telehealth Policy Committee member that meets with legislators and insurance companies to promote telemedicine and reimbursement for those services. He is on the board of directors for Northwest Florida Health Network, a managing entity for the Department of Children and Families. He is a peer mentor for the State of Florida charged with educating recovery programs on the use of medication assisted treatment in addiction medicine. He has testified before the House Appropriations Committee of the FL House to promote funding for opioid addiction treatment for the State of Florida. He has also testified to the New Mexico legislature promoting increased access to care for patients suffering with opioid use disorder and has lobbied in Washington, D.C. in both the House and Senate promoting laws that impact better treatment for people suffering from addiction.
