Dr. Brummel-Smith holds the Charlotte Edwards Maguire Professorship and is a faculty member of the Department of Geriatrics in the College of Medicine.
Biosketch
Dr. Brummel-Smith served as he founding chair of the Department of Geriatrics from 2003 to 2015. Prior to coming to FSU, he served as the medical director to the PACE Elderplace program in Portland, OR and the Bain Chair of the Providence Center on Aging. He was a professor of family medicine at the Oregon Health Sciences University. He has served as the Section Chief for Geriatrics, Department of Family Medicine at University of Southern California, and Division Chief, Geriatrics, Department of Medicine, Oregon Health Sciences University. He is a past president of the American Geriatrics Society and was a member of the National Advisory Council on Aging at the National Institute on Aging. He has been chair of the Association of Directors of Geriatric Academic Programs. He completed a Health and Aging Policy Fellowship, working as staff on the Senate Special Committee on Aging in Washington, D.C. He currently chairs the Alzheimer's Research Advisory Council for the Florida Department of Health. He has been selected by his peers 15 times as one of the Best Doctors in America.

Research Focus
Dr. Brummel-Smith's research has addressed the effect of a support group on caregivers of patients with Alzheimer’s disease, the effect of routinely discussing preferences for CPR upon admission to a rehabilitation hospital, methods of assessing pain in persons with Alzheimer’s disease, outcomes of end-of-life care planning in frail elders, and the use of the Physician Orders for Life-sustaining Treatment (POLST) form in advance-care planning. He currently is studying the effect of the Medicaid managed long term care program and the best ways to engage persons with early dementia in discussing advance care plans.
