Gerry Maitland M.D has been a faculty member in the FSU College of Medicine since its inception. He is professor of Neuro-Ophthalmology and Neurology in the Department of Clinical Sciences. He currently serves as director of the FSU/TMH Neurorehabilitation Research Center and as community partner for Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare directing the Balance, Vision, and Movement Disorders Clinics. He is also director of Neurorehabilitation Program. He previously served as director of the National Parkinson’s Foundation Care Clinic, and the Multiple Sclerosis Center. Prior to coming to FSU, he was clinical professor of Neurology at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida and prior to that associate professor of Neurology and Neuro-Ophthalmology at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences School of Medicine, Washington DC with a rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During the latter appointment, he served as the Neuro-Ophthalmology consultant to the Vietnam head injury study. His primary responsibilities at the college of medicine include teaching clinical neurologic correlations in the neuroscience course and neurologic and ophthalmologic examinations in the Doctoring courses years 1 and 2. He directs the neurologic rotation for the FSU Internal Medicine program at the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. He serves as mentor to the BRIDGE program and academic advisor and preceptor to medical students in years 1 and 2. He educates both pre-medical and medical students in translational research in the field of neurological science with particular emphasis on visual function and motor performance in both healthy elderly and individuals with neurodegenerative disease. His work is accomplished in collaboration with the Department of Psychology, College of Human Sciences, Institute of Sports Sciences & Medicine, and the Aero-propulsion, Mechatronics, and Energy Center at FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. He has authored over 150 refereed articles and published abstracts and presents both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Maitland received his medical degree from St. Louis University. His post-doctoral training include internal medicine residency at the University of Connecticut; a neurologic residency at Letterman Hospital and the University of California, San Francisco, and fellowships in pediatric neurology and Neuro-Ophthalmology at the University of California, San Francisco.
