Job Description
In his role as Senior Associate Dean for Clinical and Community Affairs, Dr. Van Durme serves as the Chief Medical Officer of the FSU College of Medicine. He oversees all of our clinical operations for quality, safety, and coordination of services and serves as our liaison between the college and other health care entities. He was the leader for the development of our integrated primary care and behavioral health center, FSU PrimaryHealth, which opened in SW Tallahassee in May, 2019. As the former Director (now Associate Director) of the Center on Global Health, he taught courses on global health to students and directed a long standing community health program in rural Nicaragua.
Biosketch
Dr. Van Durme joined the FSU College of Medicine in 2004 as Chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Rural Health after spending 15 years in academic and private practice in the Tampa Bay area. He served as Department Chair from 2004-2018 before assuming his current position as Senior Associate Dean. Over the years, he has held numerous leadership positions at FSU including: Director of Rural Health, Electives Administrator, Director of the Center on Global Health, Course Director for Evidence Based Practice, and founder and director of a global health service-learning program in rural Nicaragua. He is the recipient of numerous teaching and service awards, including the Sir William Osler and the Hippocrates Awards for Outstanding Faculty Role Model, University of South Florida President’s Award for Faculty Excellence and multiple national nominations for humanism awards. He has been inducted into both the Gold Humanism Honor Society and Alpha Omega Alpha National Honor Society. Dr. Van Durme is a nationally known teacher and leader in family medicine. He is a past president of the Florida Academy of Family Physicians and served on the board of directors of the American Academy of Family Physicians, as well as several other national organizations. He has been very active in international humanitarian efforts in numerous countries, including ongoing work in Nicaragua.
