John A Blackmon M.D.

Associate Professor, Biomedical Sciences

Main Campus

Dr. Blackmon joined the faculty of the College of Medicine in 2010 after practicing anatomic and clinical pathology in both private and university medical centers. Prior to this appointment, he had participated in the sophomore pathology courses as a courtesy faculty member since 2004. After residency, Dr. Blackmon was a staff pathologist at the Centers for Disease Control, where he was actively involved with the laboratory investigation of the first recognized Legionnaires’ Disease outbreak. Afterward he was appointed as Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham (UAB). He held appointments as Clinical Assistant and Clinical Associate Professor at UAB while practicing pathology at the Baptist Medical Centers (Princeton and Montclair), also in Birmingham. In 1987, Dr. Blackmon returned to his hometown of Thomasville, Ga., where he was in practice at John D. Archbold Memorial Hospital until his move to FSU.

Dr. Blackmon attended undergraduate school at Florida State University, received his M.D. degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, and was a resident at Duke University Medical Center. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.

Dr. Blackmon’s previous research interests have mainly been in the area of pulmonary infection. In his work on Legionnaires' Disease, he described the pulmonary pathology exhibited in the fatal cases from the 1976 Philadelphia outbreak, participated in the initial demonstration of the Legionella pneumophila in human tissues, studied the pathogenesis of pulmonary Legionella infection, and described pulmonary sequelae of the disease. At FSU Dr. Blackmon has collaborated on research related to abnormal fibrosing reactions.
