Job Description
Dr. Watson mentors first- and second-year medical students with an emphasis on the art of medicine and humanism in the care of patients. He is a behavioral neurologist and teaches in the area of neuroscience. While Chair of the Curriculum Committee, the committee developed the four principles on which curriculum redesign was later based. These are: our curriculum will be integrated, developmental, competency-based, and the resources needed to achieve excellence would be provided.
Biosketch
Dr. Watson has served as a professor of neurology, neuroscience and clinical psychology for more than four decades, during which time he has been recognized as an outstanding teacher and student advocate.
He is an acknowledged authority on curriculum, and among his many published articles he wrote "Rediscovering the Medical School" for the July 2003 issue of Academic Medicine.
Dr. Watson helped develop the concept and is considered the "grandfather" of mission-based budgeting. As such, he has provided talks and workshops at numerous medical schools, AAMC meetings and other professional meetings on mission-based budgeting, curriculum and the continuum of medical education.
Among the numerous teaching awards he has received, Dr. Watson was chosen as recipient of the 2005 Association of American Medical Colleges Alpha Omega Alpha Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award. The award is the highest national recognition given for contributions to the education mission.
Dr. Watson served as Senior Associate Dean for Educational Affairs at the University of Florida College of Medicine for 17 years. In that role, he was delegated authority for undergraduate medical, physician assistant, graduate biomedical, graduate medical and continuing medical education. He also served as the Jules B. Chapman, M.D. Professor in Clinical Care and Humaneness for 12 years. He served as Vice Chair of the Department of Neurology until 2008.
