My decision to pursue a career as a physician stems from a series of transformative experiences that have shaped my perspective and fueled my passion for serving others. I have had the fortune of living in both the U.S. and Peru during my childhood, and seeing the contrast in how health care functions in the two countries has left a lasting impact on me. During an ER visit in Peru, I was confronted with long lines, unattended patients receiving IV drips in the lobby, and infants forced to share limited oxygen resources. The evident lack of staff and equipment deeply affected me. This experience provided me with a path to follow, and made me realize that I wanted to one day be in a position where I could dedicate my life to serving others in their most vulnerable state as a physician.
When I moved back to the U.S. in high school to pursue my education, I soon realized that despite the abundance of resources available in America, access to health care was a challenge here, as well. I experienced the impact of this firsthand as I went through periods of time without health insurance due to my financial limitations. These experiences further highlighted the various disparities within health care and motivated me to strive for change.
Throughout my undergraduate journey, I focused on understanding how I could better serve my community as a future physician. This led me to pursue a Master in Public Health degree, equipping me with the knowledge and skills that. when combined with my medical degree, will not only allow me to treat patients individually, but also work toward addressing larger health concerns at the community level.
My aspiration to become a doctor is rooted in my deep love for the field of medicine and my unwavering commitment to bridging the gaps in health-care access and quality. I am determined to utilize my influence and education to provide people with improved health-care access and better quality of care. For me, becoming a doctor is not merely a career path, it is a calling: a lifelong commitment to using my skills and knowledge to serve those around me.
