Dung Nguyen, M.D., and Anh-vu Nguyen, M.D.,

Jeffrey Spike, Ph.D., contributed to the
publication of the Encyclopedia of Science, Technology and Ethics on
the subjects of persistent vegetative state and human subjects.
David J. Steele, Ph.D.,
co-authored "Case Study Research: The View from Complexity Science” in
Qualitative Health Research.
PRESENTATIONS: Jerry Boland,
M.D., made a presentation on the College of Medicine’s Rural Track program
at the National Rural Health Association’s Rural Medical Educator’s annual
conference in New Orleans.
Art Clawson, M.S., served on a panel for the
session, "State and Local Political Advocacy: Making It Work," at the
National AHEC Organization Annual Leadership Workshop in Tulsa, Okla. He
also presented "Awareness of Training Opportunities in Underserved
Communities--AHEC Opportunities" at the first National Health Service Corps
All Ambassador Meeting in Washington, D.C.
Robert Glueckauf, Ph.D., led the seminar
“Training for Faith-Based Leaders: Caring for Persons with Alzheimer’s” at
the Johnnie B. Byrd, Sr. Alzheimer’s Center & Research Institute.
Fred Kobylarz, M.D., M.P.H., presented “Tools
for Teaching Ethnogeriatrcs: The ETHNICS framework” in a symposium session
titled “Getting Started: Strategies for Teaching Cultural Competence in the
Health Care Setting” at the American Geriatric Society’s annual meeting in
Orlando. Gerry
Maitland, M.D., gave invited lectures on: “Neurorehabilitation of the visual
system” at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society meeting in Jacksonville;
“Balance and Gait Disorders in Advancing Parkinsonism” at the National
Parkinson Foundation meeting; “Optic Neuropathies” at the third annual
Vitreoretinal Meeting in Tallahassee; and “Posttraumatic dizziness” at the
Florida Association of Athletic Trainers in Orlando.
Santiago Martinez, M.D., presented “Update in
the Treatment of Urticaria and Strategies in Diagnosis and Management of
Bronchial Asthma” at the in the fourth annual International Allergy
Symposium of Central America and the Caribbean in the Dominican Republic.
Andrew F. Payer, Ph.D., presented Anatomical
Sciences De Novo Workshop at the American Association of Anatomists 2005
meeting held in San Diego, Calif. The goal of the workshop was to have
participants plan the future anatomical sciences curricula for medical
schools incorporating new ideas and technology. The workshop also explored
the future source of clinical anatomy faculty for these future curricula.
Payer also gave an invited presentation, “Reinventing Anatomy: Update on
Education in Anatomical Sciences in Medical Schools,” at the annual meeting
of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society meeting in St. Louis, Mo.
Curtis Stine, M.D., Nancy Clark, M.Ed., and
Dave Steele, Ph.D., conducted the educational session, “Using
Student-collected Encounter Data for Course Evaluation and Student
Education,” at the Society of Teachers in Family Medicine conference in New
Orleans. Jeffrey Spike, Ph.D., and Stine conducted a special topic session,
“Integrating Medical Ethics into a Family Medicine Clerkship” at the
meeting. SERVICE:
Art Clawson, M.S., is serving this year as
president of the Florida AHEC Network. He also was selected by the National
Rural Health Association to serve on the 2006 Annual Conference Planning
Committee. Suzanne
Johnson, Ph.D., was elected as Health Psychology’s Representative to the
American Psychological Association’s Council of Representatives, the
association’s governing body. She also serves as a member of the NIH site
visit team for the University of Chicago’s General Clinical Research Center.
HONORS & AWARDS: Lisa
Granville, M.D., has been selected by the Florida Chapter of the American
College of Physicians to receive an “Outstanding Teacher” award in
recognition of her dedication to the education of medical students and
residents. She will be presented the award at the regional meeting in
Sarasota.
