GRANTSGareth Dutton, Ph.D., received a First Year Assistant
Professor grant from the FSU Council for Research and Creativity for the
project, “Correlates of Physical Activity among Patients with Type 2
Diabetes."
HONORS & AWARDS
Mark Chaet, M.D., was named director of the Minimally Invasive Surgery
Fellowship Training Program at Florida Hospital, Orlando. This is a two-year
fellowship for surgery residents in postgraduate years 6 and 7.
Nadine Dexter, M.L.S., has been elected vice-president/president-elect for
Florida Health Science Library Association.
Gareth Dutton, Ph.D., received a Research Citation Award from the Society of
Behavioral Medicine for his paper, “Effects of a physical activity
intervention on the nutritional practices of women,” presented at the
society’s annual meeting.
Peter Eveland, Ed.D., has been elected vice-chair and president-elect for
the Southern Region of the Group on Student Affairs.
Dutton and Mary Gerend, Ph.D., have been accepted to the NIH Summer
Institute on the Design and Conduct of Randomized Clinical Trials Involving
Behavioral Interventions in July in Washington, D.C.
Michael Howell, M.D., was elected as Fellow of the American College of
Physicians. He also was awarded the Jefferson Award for community service
with the Orange County Medical Clinics and selected as the Volunteer of the
Year for Special Care, a specialty health-care program for the Orange County
Medical Clinics.
Fred Kobylarz, M.D., M.P.H., is being recognized as outstanding committee
member by the American Geriatrics Society at its annual meeting held in
Chicago in May. He currently serves on the ethnogeriatrics and research
committees.
Chad Kollas, M.D., was elected as Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice
and Palliative Medicine.
Kenneth Krumins, M.D., was named “Sports Medicine Person of the Year" for
2006 by the Athletic Trainers Association of Florida. Dr. Krumins serves as
team physician for the University of Central Florida.
Alma Littles, M.D., is featured in a recent special anniversary issue of
Florida Physician, which celebrates the UF College of Medicine’s 50th year.
In a section entitled ‘Storytellers,’ the magazine asks readers to “meet
seven people who represent the thousands of stories from UF medicine.’’
Littles, associate dean for academic affairs, is the first person featured.
Elena Reyes, Ph.D., has been inducted into the Oscar Arias Sanchez Hispanic
Honor Society.
David Steele, Ph.D., has been appointed medical education editor for the
journal Patient Education and Counseling, where he is responsible for
submissions from North and South America, Australia and New Zealand. He
co-authored an editorial for the journal entitled, “From patient education
to health professions education: Introducing the section on medical
education.’’
Daniel Van Durme, M.D., was nominated for the Association of American
Medical Colleges Humanism in Medicine Award.

abdominal Closure: An Age Limited Option?’’ at the Florida Committee on
Trauma Residents Paper Competition in Tampa.
Dr. Cheatham, Dr. Promes, Dr. Lube (along with others) presented a poster,
“Independent Lung Ventilation in the Management of Traumatic Bronchopleural
Fistula,’’ at the Southeastern Surgical Congress in Orlando.
Mark Clark, M.D., will present his study, “An Examination of the Test
Characteristics of the Pediatric Urinalysis,’’ at the Society for Academic
Emergency Medicine annual meeting in San Francisco in May.
Nancy Clark, M.Ed., and Dennis Baker, Ph.D., will present their poster,
“Teaching PDA Skills to Community Preceptors: Strategies, Outcomes, Lessons
Learned,’’ at the Southern Group on Educational Affairs Annual Conference in
Galveston, Texas, in May and led a seminar, “Creating Professional
Scholastic and Research Posters Using Common Microsoft Office Tools,’’ at
the Society of Teachers in Family Medicine Annual Conference in San
Francisco.
Clark and Curtis Stine, M.D., presented a poster, “Giving Meaning to
Student-collected Patient Encounter Data: Using the Data to Teach Medical
Students,” at the STFM Annual Conference in San Francisco.
Clark, Dr. Stine and David Steele, Ph.D., led a seminar, “Using
Student-collected Encounter Data for Course Evaluation and Student
Education,’’ at the STFM pre-doctoral conference in Charleston, S.C.
Art Clawson, M.S., presented "How National Health Service Corps Campus
Ambassadors work with the State's Primary Care Office" at the National
Health Service Corps Primary Care Offices annual meeting in Washington, D.C.
He also presented "How the Area Health Education Center Program and the
Geriatric Education Center Programs Work Together and Why It Is Important to
Fund These Programs" at the National Rural Health Association Annual Policy
Institute in Washington, D.C.
Gareth Dutton, Ph.D., co-authored four presentations, including, “Effects of
a physical activity intervention on the nutritional practices of women’,
“Physical activity promotion among predominantly African-American women
participating in a primary care weight management program”, “Active Aging:
Physical activity in a community-based sample of older adults”, and
“Racial/ethnic differences in the consistency of self-reported physical
activity” at the Society of Behavioral Medicine annual meeting in San
Francisco.
Dr. Lube and Dr. Cheatham (along with others) presented a poster, “The
Safety of Pancreaticoduodenectomy in a Community General Surgery
Residency,’’ at the Southeastern Surgical Congress in Orlando.
Dr. Lube co-presented a poster, “Successful Ligation of the Suprarenal
Portion of the Inferior Vena Cava for Penetrating Trauma: Case Report and
Review of the Literature,’’ at the Southeastern Surgical Congress in
Orlando.
Dr. Lube co-presented a poster, “Primary Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the
Breast,’’ at the Southeastern Surgical Congress in Orlando.
Gerry Maitland, M.D., presented “Sound-induced oscillopsia (Tullio’s
phenomenon) due to anterior semicircular canal dehiscence without clinically
obvious oculomotor signs,’’ at the North American Neuro-opthalmology Society
annual meetings in Tucson, Ariz. Fourth-year medical student Jason Farrah
was co-author.
Dr. Maitland served as guest speaker at the Fourth Annual Southern
Vitreoretinal Symposium on ‘the retina and systemic disease.’ He lectured on
pupillary dysfunction and systemic disease.
Alice Pomidor, M.D., M.P.H., presented “Falls” at the Alabama State Nurses
Association annual meeting in Mobile, Ala., which was simultaneously Webcast
to four remote locations in the state.
Pushpendra Sharma, M.D., Fred Kobylarz, M.D., and Jacqueline Lloyd, M.D.,
will present “Required Fourth-Year Geriatric Clerkship: Student Evaluation
of Clinical Experience,’’ at the American Geriatrics Society annual meeting
in Chicago in May.
David Steele, Ph.D., gave three presentations as a visiting professor at the
University of Massachusetts Medical School’s “Excellence in Medical
Education’’ speaker series: “Implementing the AAMC Recommendations for the
Clinical Education of Medical Students at Florida State University College
of Medicine,” “Creating the 21st Century Medical School: Technology Across

Gerry Maitland, M.D., co-authored “The effects of loading and unloading
treadmill walking on balance, gait, fall risk and daily function in
Parkinsonism’’ in the Journal of Neurorehabilitation.
Dr. Maitland co-authored, “Distraction, competition and interference: How do
people navigate with brain damage in a sea of distraction?’’ He presented
the article at the World Congress of Neurorehabilitation and it appeared in
abstract form in the journal Neurorehabilitation and Neuro Repair.
Dr. Maitland co-authored along with second-year student Paulo Silva and
others a paper presented at the World Congress of Parkinsonism entitled,

SERVICE
Alice Pomidor, M.D., M.P.H., co-chaired the annual Health Professionals
Faculty Development Conference in Tallahassee, where she presented “Falls: A
Medicine Perspective.’’
Dr. Pomidor also co-chaired the 21st annual Alzheimer’s Disease Education &
Training Conference at the FSU College of Medicine, where she presented,
“Current Advances in Research and Treatment” and “When Do they Need Medical
Care?”
Dr. Pomidor is serving as the representative of the American Academy of
Family Physicians on a national task force of the National Highway
Transportation Safety Administration, which is developing guidelines for the
medical evaluation of drivers recommended by the American Association of
Motor Vehicle Administrators.
Pushpendra Sharma, M.D., has been appointed to the Ethnogeriatrics Committee
of the American Geriatrics Society to help improve clinical care and quality
of life for diverse and rapidly increasing numbers of ethnic and racial
groups among the older population.
Dr. Sharma and Elena Reyes, Ph. D., have been appointed to the Statewide
Strategic Planning Committee of the Office of Minority Health, to develop a
plan to help eliminate the racial and ethnic disparities in health-care
delivery in the state of Florida.
David Steele, Ph.D., has been selected to a five-person panel of medical
educators to conduct an accreditation site visit in May at the University of
Geneva Faculty of Medicine. |
