GRANTS
 

Ken Brummel-Smith, M.D., served as co-investigator on a United States Department of Agriculture-funded study to assess how functional foods (those that may provide health benefits beyond basic nutrition) affect chronic disease in humans.

Kathy Lee, M.D., has been awarded a Primary Source and Collection Development Grant for Psychiatry DVDs representing mental illness. The DVDs assess the way mental illness is portrayed in film. The DVDs provide an opportunity for students and researchers to study how mental illness is represented in popular culture and to assess societal attitudes toward mental illness. 

SERVICE, HONORS & AWARDS

Ewa Bienkiewicz, Ph.D., received a one-year (April 1, 2007 - March 31, 2008) $12,000 CRC Planning Grant for “Misfolded Proteins in Disease: Insights into Conformational Flexibility of the N-terminal Domain of the Prion Protein and its Impact on Pathological Amyloid Formation.”

Les Beitsch, M.D., J.D., was named associate editor of the nation’s premier public health journal, American Journal of Public Health.

Robert Brooks, M.D., M.B.A., was appointed to a four-year term on the National Advisory Allergy and Infectious Diseases Council of the National Insitutes of Health. The appointment was made by United States Secretary of Health and Human Services Michael Levitt.

Art Clawson, M.S., was elected to another term on the National Rural Health Association board of trustees.

Clawson was recently elected to serve a two-year term on the editorial board of the Journal of Rural Health.

Debra Danforth, M.S., ARNP, FAANP, completed the Sigma Theta Tau International  Omada Board Mentoring Program.

Washington Hill, MD, FACOG, received an award from the Charlotte County Healthy Start Coalition Inc. in appreciation for what his office does to improve the health of Florida’s mothers and babies, April 2007.      

Dr. Hill received the NAACP’s 2006 President Award from the Sarasota County branch of the NAACP in October 2006.

Dr. Hill was named chief of staff-elect for the medical staff at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Sarasota, October 2006.

Morton Levitt, M.D., was elected to the Duke University chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society. Dr. Levitt is a graduate of the Duke University School of Medicine.

Charles Maitland, M.D., was named to the editorial board for the Journal of Medical Speech-Language Pathology.

Dr. Maitland hosted and was keynote speaker at the National Parkinson's Foundation (NPF) Symposium: Parkinsonism and Other Movement Disorders on the FSU campus in September.

Dr. Maitland was keynote speaker for the National MS Society's "Blueprint Series on MS" in February. He lectured on the epidemiology of MS.

Dr. Maitland was a featured speaker at the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital symposium on MS in March. He spoke on cognitive dysfunction in early MS.

Nasseer Masoodi, M.D., C.M.D., earned board certification in hospice and palliative medicine from the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Terence McCoy, M.D., former College of Medicine faculty member, received the Capital Medical Society 2007 Outstanding Physician Award.

Joan Y. Meek, M.D., M.S., is completing a six-year term on the board of directors of the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners. She has served as the Secretary and the Chair of the Certification Examination Development Committee.

Nir Menachemi, Ph.D., M.P.H., was appointed to a three-year term on the editorial board of Health Care Management Review. Menachemi also serves on the editorial review panel of the Journal of Healthcare Quality.

Michael J Muszynski, M.D., Orlando Regional Campus Dean, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Orange County Medical Society for a three-year term.

Suzanne P. Nagy, M.S.L.S., M.S.C.S., web services librarian for the College of Medicine, has been recognized at the Distinguished level in the Medical Library Association’s Academy of Health Information Professionals. 

Jeffrey Spike, Ph.D., will serve on the scientific committee and as a reviewer of submissions at the Third International Conference on Clinical Ethics Consultation in Toronto in June.

David Steele, Ph.D., has been appointed by the National Board of Medical Examiners to a two-year term on the test materials development committee for the behavioral sciences for USMLE Step 1.

Daniel Van Durme, M.D., was appointed to the board of directors of the Annals of Family Medicine, the premier research journal in the specialty of family medicine.

PRESENTATIONS

Edward Bradley III, M.D., presented “What is the optimal approach to infected pancreatic necrosis?’’ for the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, Washington, D.C., May 12, 2007.

Dr. Bradley will give three presentations at the International Surgical Conference in Madrid, Spain, May 28-30, 2007: “Open packing for infected pancreatic necrosis,’’ “Current management of severe acute pancreatitis’’ and “Is the Atlanta Classification System still useful after 15 years?’’

Ken Brummel-Smith, M.D., delivered a speech in February at the University of South Florida School of Aging Studies entitled, “The Growing Shortage of Physicians Trained in Geriatrics and What the FSU College of Medicine is Doing About It.’’

Dr. Brummel-Smith delivered an Internal Medicine Grand Rounds talk on geriatric rehabilitation at the USF School of Medicine in January. He spoke on “Physician orders for Life Sustaining Treatment’’ at the USF/VA Medical Center and for the National Association of Emergency Medical System Physicians.

Ariel Cole, M.D., and geriatric fellows Jeaudine Bontemps, M.D., and Keron Ferguson, M.D., presented their poster “Dementia Presenting as Criminal Behavior,” at the American Geriatrics annual scientific meeting in Chicago.  The poster was selected for the Presidential Poster Session.

Debra Danforth, M.S., ARNP, FAANP, presented “Adolescents and Sex: where are they today?’’ at the Tallahassee Council of Advanced Practice Nurses annual conference, March 15-16.

Dr. Hill presented, “Medical Legal Pitfalls when Treating Preterm Labor and Preterm Premature Rupture of the Membranes,” and, “Multiple Gestation: The Multiple Clinical Pitfalls,” at the second annual Maternal-Fetal Medicine Conference Topics of Maternal-Fetal Medicine for 2007, in Evansville, Ind., April 2007.

Dr. Hill presented the keynote address, “Substance Abuse – What Providers Need to Know,” at the Healthy Start Preconception and Interconceptional Care Provider Conference, Port Charlotte, Fla., April 2007.

Dr. Hill was conference chairperson and presented:  “OB Lessons Learned from the Courtroom: What Every Clinician Should Know,” at the first annual A Day with the Perinatologists, in Sarasota, Fla., April 2007.

Dr. Hill was conference chairperson and presented “Doctor Can I really Use This Medication During Pregnancy?” “Multiple Gestations: The Multiple Clinical Pitfalls” and “OB Lessons Learned from The Courtroom: What Every Clinician Should Know” at the 14th annual Winter Conference on OB/GYN, Big Sky, Mont., February-March 2007.

Dr. Hill co-presented a poster with others from the Florida Department of Health and the Pregnancy Associated Maternal Review Committee, “Pregnancy-Related Mortality Associated with Obesity in Florida”, at the 27th Annual meeting of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, San Francisco, Calif., February 2007.

Dr. Hill was keynote speaker for First Step Conference and presented:  “Substance Abuse and the Pregnant Woman,” in Sarasota, Fla., February 2007.

Dr. Hill presented, “The Abnormal Normal Heart” at the 4th annual Symposium on Advances in Perinatal Cardiology, St. Petersburg, Fla., November 2006.       

Dr. Hill presented:  “Progesterone Therapy for Prevention of Preterm Birth:  Myth or Magic?” at the 2006 ACOG District IV annual meeting held at The Breakers, Palm Beach, Fla., October 2006.

Dr. Hill participated in the Central Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists annual meeting and discussed “The ultrasound estimation of amniotic fluid volume in diamniotic twin pregnancies and prediction of perinatal outcomes” in Las Vegas, Nev., October 2006.

Dr. Hill presented Grand Rounds at Manatee Memorial Hospital on:  “The Assessment of Fetal Lung Maturity,” in Bradenton, Fla., September 2006.

Dr. Hill presented “Sickle Cell Crisis,’’ “The Patient In Labor and Delivery Who Seizes,’’ “The Acute Abdomen in the Obstetric Patient” and “OB Emergency Lessons Learned from the Courtroom” at the 20th Annual Fall Conference on Controversies & Clinical Issues In High Risk Obstetrics, San Francisco, Calif., September, 2006.

Donna J. Jacobi, M.D., and Paula Montgomery, M.D., co-presented "Partners in Care: Working with Hospice and Long Term Care" at the 30th annual American Medical Directors Association annual meeting in Hollywood, Fla., March 29-April 1.

Morton Levitt, M.D., spoke on ‘Stroke Awareness’ on the Dr. Greg Davis on Medicine show on National Public Radio-member station WUKY 91.3 FM in Lexington, Ky. The April 15 broadcast was heard by more than 50,000 listeners and will be included in the June issue of CAP at your Service, to be distributed to more than 16,000 College of American Pathologists members.

Dr. Levitt previously this year spoke on the importance of scheduling a cholesterol screening test to help prevent heart disease as part of American Heart Month. The interview was distributed to local radio stations February 1-7 and accepted for airplay by the Florida Network, serving 58 radio stations throughout the state, including WTAL-AM, WTNT-FM, WTLY-FM, WHBX-FM, and WEGT-FM in Tallahassee.

Charles Maitland, M.D., presented papers at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association annual meeting in Miami Beach in November on the following topics: Semantic Distraction Effects on Picture Identification in Aphasia; omputerized Measures of Working Memory in Parkinson’s Disease; Reaction Time Dilemma in Neuromotor Disorders: Influence of Initiation Delay; Affects of Dopamine-Replacing Medication on Motor Imagery in Parkinson’s Disease and Arterial Dissection: A Veiled Risk & Case Example. 

Joan Y. Meek, M.D., M.S., presented "Maternal Nutrition during Breastfeeding" at the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine Annual Conference in Niagara Falls, N.Y., in September.  She also gave presentations at the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference and Exhibition in October on "Developing Clinical Breastfeeding Counseling Skills, Basic and Advanced Session." 

Dr. Meek discussed "Breastfeeding Support: Practical Tips for the Pediatrician" at the Pediatric Society of Puerto Rico Annual Convention in February.

Dr. Meek presented "Clinical Breastfeeding Management" in February at the 2007 Winter CME Symposium of the Florida Academy of Physician Assistants, and she spoke on "Breastfeeding: Applying the Evidence to Improve Practice" at the National Academy of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners 28th Annual Conference in March, both held in Orlando. 

Dr. Meek appeared on the nationally syndicated PBS series "A Place of Our Own" as an expert guest on breastfeeding.  

Nir Menachemi, Ph.D., M.P.H., Askar Chukmaitov, M.D., M.P.H., M.P.A., and Robert Brooks, M.D., M.B.A., presented “The Effect of Payer Mix on the Adoption of Information Technologies by Hospitals” at the Southern Management Association annual meeting in Clearwater.

Menachemi and colleagues presented “Electronic Health Record Adoption by Physicians: A Model Incorporating Market Characteristics” at the Southern Management Association annual meeting in Clearwater.

Menachemi presented “The Ambulatory EMR in Florida: Offices of All Sizes May Apply” at the inaugural meeting of the Florida Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems in Tampa, March 17, 2007.

Menachemi presented “Patient Safety & Healthcare Quality: What’s IT all about?” at Jackson Hospital in Marianna, January 30, 2007.

Menachemi presented “Information Technology Research at FSU” at Leadership Tallahassee-Healthcare Day, Tallahassee, October 5, 2006.

Menachemi delivered the keynote address entitled “Rethinking R.O.I. for H.I.T.” at the Medical Users Software Exchange Annual Conference in San Francisco, Calif. 

Jeffrey Spike, Ph.D., led the only pre-conference workshop on how to do clinical ethics consultation at the annual meeting of the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities, October 2006. 

Spike was selected to speak on defining best practices for ethics consultation at the Northeast Florida Bioethics Forum in Jacksonville, the Shands Ethics Committee in Gainesville, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital and at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. He also presented on the topic at a Florida Bioethics Network conference in Daytona Beach, where he also gave a general talk on clinical ethics to the family medicine residents at Halifax Hospital.

Spike delivered speeches on the topic of Pediatric Ethics at All-Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, at the Northeast Florida Bioethics Forum in Jacksonville and at Shands Hospital in Gainesville.

Spike delivered a lecture on “Impact of Physician Stress on Medical Ethics” at the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians meeting in Kissimmee, March 16, 2007.

David Steele, Ph.D., served as a visiting professor at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, where he gave an Educational Grand Rounds presentation titled: Creating Significant Learning Experiences in Medical Education. He also conducted a 2 1/2-hour workshop on Writing Instructional Objectives.  The presentations were part of the start of a major review and renewal of the curriculum at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine.

Branko Stefanovic, Ph.D., is an invited speaker for the international Gordon’s single topic conference “Collagen” to be held in July in New London, N.H. Stefanovic’s topic will be “Post-transcriptional regulation of type I collagen expression and coordinated translation of alpha 1(I) and alpha 2(I) mRNAs.’’

Daniel Van Durme, M.D., presented a workshop on Dermatology Procedures and Coding, as well as a lecture on “Incorporating Evidence-Based Medicine into Everyday Practice” to the Florida Academy of Family Physicians at their meeting in Orlando in April.
