LESSONS
LEARNED LEAD STUDENTS TO TAKE ACTION (cont'd) |
In the Dominican Republic, a woman who walked barefoot for several miles to
reach the clinic where the McKenna sisters were working ended up in need of
medical attention for her raw and wounded feet. Upon returning to their home
in Pompano, Fla., the McKenna sisters brainstormed with their mother to find
a solution. The result is a non-profit organization called Share One Pair
formed to collect quality used footwear for distribution in countries where
a good pair of shoes is a luxury. The response to their solution has
surprised them, as well.
Their one-bedroom apartment near campus soon was overflowing with several
thousand pair of shoes. The goal now is to raise $6,000 to pay for the
20-foot shipping container needed to get the shoes to Haiti, and to make the
shipments on a regular basis. “Getting worms through the feet is a problem
in Haiti that can be easily addressed by having adequate footwear,’’ Molly
McKenna said. “A good pair of shoes can help kids remain in school instead
of being home sick and can keep fathers at work, helping them to feed their
families. A pair of shoes taken for granted in our closet can be a true
blessing to another family.’’
To donate money toward shipping costs, contact Share One Pair at
850-321-9620. Shoes may be dropped off at the College of Medicine or Garnet
and Gold stores in Tallahassee.
