MedEdPortal is a web site location sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges for submitting educational materials to share with others and to access educational materials for use in teaching. Spikes' projects are Doctoring 3 classes he developed at the College of Medicine and has taught at regional campuses for the last five years:

  • Patient Centered Medicine:  Writing the Patient’s Life Story. Students pick a patient to interview and write a 1,000-word essay summarizing the patient’s life and how illness has affected it.
  • Dax’s Case: Autonomy and Paternalism. Utilizes video of Texas burn patient Donald Cowart to promote reflection on whether traditional paternalistic practices were justified, and whether they still exist today.
  • On Doctoring: Essays on Professionalism. Six brief essays written by physicians in the free book “On Doctoring” prompt discussions of professionalism in medical education and in private practice.

Jeffrey Spike Ph.D.Spike’s projects have been accessed 29 times during the first year for use in undergraduate medical education and residency programs in psychiatry and family medicine. Other places where the curriculum projects have been implemented include a surgery clerkship, dental school, nursing school and public health facility. The list of schools accessing his projects includes Duke, Boston Medical Center, Penn State, the University of New Mexico, the University of Texas-El Paso and medical schools in Canada, Australia, and Taiwan.
