DR. POWERBALL
Before Oct. 15, the Orlando regional campus knew dermatologist
William Steele
as a brand-new member of its clerkship faculty. Now the world knows him as the
winner of a $189 million Powerball prize through the Florida Lottery. And
everyone is wondering: When he told reporters that he planned to donate some of
the money to charity, which ones did he have in mind?
REACCREDITATION
CONGRATULATIONS
The Florida State
University-Sacred Heart Hospital Obstetrics-Gynecology (OB/Gyn) Residency
Program has received a three-year reaccreditation status from the OB/Gyn
Residency Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical
Education, based on the site visit earlier this year, Senior Associate Dean Alma
Littles announced in October. She specifically thanked and congratulated
Clyde Dorr, M.D., Residency Program director; Holly Lohr, OB/Gyn
Program coordinator; Connie Donohoe, coordinator, Administrative
Services/GME; Michael Muszynski, M.D., chair, Internal Review Committee;
and all the faculty, residents and staff who played a role in helping develop,
document and present the quality of the program.
THE WISDOM WALL
Walls that once were blank white slates now have wise, colorful faces looking
out from them. Those faces are part of a photo gallery created in August to
honor the seniors who participated in a service learning project with Class of
2012 students in the spring. It was sponsored by the Department of Student
Affairs and supported with money from the D.W. Reynolds Foundation grant.
As Reynolds Grant Coordinator
Suzanne Baker
explained it, the activity had two main goals: (1) to help the students learn
about cultural diversity and the diversity of health- and medical-care
experiences among geriatric populations; and (2) to acquaint them with the
senior as a person (not a patient) and further develop their skills in active
listening and history taking.
So the students interviewed seniors about their lives and medical experiences;
videotaped them; then created short documentary films with highlights of the
interviews. Their videos were exhibited in the atrium in the spring. Now a photo
of each senior hangs in the hallway, along with memorable quotes, lessons
learned and interesting facts about them. Among the seniors is Bobby Bowden, who
notes that he didn’t even have health insurance until he was 40 years old.
If you work in or plan to visit the main campus, take a stroll down the second-floor
hallway.

COMING APRIL 3-7, 2011
That's the date the
Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) makes a site visit for our next full
accreditation. Don’t plan any meetings, conferences or vacations: The survey
team will meet with the majority of the faculty and some students and
staff. Questions? Ask Mike Smith (mpsmith@med.fsu.edu) or Cathy Bell
(cathy.bell@med.fsu.edu). Here's
where you can find out more about the
accreditation process. |
