MEDICAL SCHOOL TEAMS UP WITH MYRON ROLLE FOUNDATION
A
new partnership between the College of Medicine and Rhodes Scholar Myron
Rolle’s foundation should mean improved medical care for underserved people
in the Bahamas, plus additional outreach to the diverse high-school students
who may become tomorrow’s physicians for communities in need.
On July 16, Florida State University football All-American Rolle and his
family announced plans to build the Myron L. Rolle Medical Clinic and Sports
Complex in Steventon, Exuma, in the Bahamas, where Rolle’s family comes
from. The complex will provide free health services to residents of Exuma,
as well as state-of-the-art wellness and training facilities for athletes
and visitors there.
The College of Medicine is partnering with the Myron L. Rolle Foundation
to advise on the project and, through its FSUCares program, to bring a
medical mission to Exuma each year. Florida State medical students and
doctors will travel to the Bahamas and provide free medical care and
supplies, funded through the foundation.
"We don't have funds to send our students to Exuma," said Dr. Alma
Littles, senior associate dean for medical education and academic affairs.
"We are very pleased to be able to partner with the work Myron wants to do
in the Bahamas, which fits well with the mission that we're trying to
accomplish -- caring for underserved populations."
The tax-exempt, nonprofit foundation is dedicated to the support of
health, wellness, educational and other charitable initiatives that
benefit children and families in need throughout the world. It was
established this year by Rolle and his family.
