AMA DISTINCTION
Mikel Hofmann, a fourth-year student at the Pensacola regional
campus, was one of 10 medical students nationally to recently receive an
American Medical Association Foundation fellowship award.
GOING GREEN
Christopher Walker, M.D., clinical associate
professor at the Orlando regional campus, and third-year medical student
Jill Ward wrote a case report published in the February issue of the
American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Green Journal. The case
focuses on an in utero rupture of the umbilical cord.
LESSONS IN ROBOTIC SURGERY
Robert I. Carey, M.D., clinical associate
professor at the Sarasota regional campus, and fourth-year student Tariq
Hakky presented data to the World Congress of EndoUrology through a
poster, “High volume, fellowship-trained single surgeon robotic-assisted
laparoscopic radical prostatectomy experience: 220 cases in 2 years.” Dr.
Carey presented the information at the organization’s conference in

POETRY IN MEDICINE
Jimmy Moss, third-year student at the
Tallahassee regional campus, had his poem, “Little Black Boy,” published
online at Pulse Magazine (link:
Moss poem). Moss said the poem describes feelings he had while growing
up striving to achieve his dreams.
SUPPORT RUN
The College of Medicine’s chapter of the American
Medical Women’s Association took part Feb. 15 in the National Breast Cancer
Marathon and half-Marathon in Jacksonville. Created by the Donna Hicken
Foundation and Mayo Clinic, all proceeds are used for breast cancer research
and care.

GOOD SPORTS
Eleven members of the College of Medicine’s Sports
Medicine Interest Group volunteered at the Panama City Ironman Triathlon
in November, staffing the medical tent under the supervision of local
physicians and college faculty members Dr. Daniel Van Durme and
Dr. Rob Campbell.
The race consisted of a 2.4 mile swim in the Gulf of
Mexico, a 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run and included more than
2,200 athletes. Medical students and physicians were busy for as long as
seven hours after race completion, attending to conditions ranging from
severe dehydration to low sodium levels in the blood due to excess sweating.

Brown, Amanda Pearcy, Jared Rosenfeld, Alvaro Bada,
Ashley Chandler, Kathleen McGlynn, David Harris and
Mark Elliott.

CHILI, AND HOT
College of Medicine students will get a chance to show
off their chili recipes while also helping to raise money for Neighborhood
Health Services at the Second Annual Chili Con Carnival. The event takes
place 2-6 p.m. at Tom Brown Park in Tallahassee, March 21.
In addition to all-you-can-eat chili for a $5 entry
fee, participants will be supporting NHS, where College of Medicine faculty
and students provide thousands of hours of medical care for medically
underserved and uninsured or underinsured patients. |
