LEAP INTO LEADERSHIP
Trina Chakravarty, Class of 2012, in June completed the Leadership
and Education Program for Students in Integrative Medicine (known by the
acronym LEAPS into IM). She was one of 20 medical students welcomed to the
program in Stockbridge, Mass. Integrative medicine focuses on treating the
whole person, not just the disease.
WELCOME TO MARIANNA
These four students,
pictured at a meet-and-greet at Jackson Hospital this summer, are the newest additions to the College of Medicine’s
Rural Track. From left, they are Joseph Gaskins, Gina Obmana, Amanda
Pearcy and Michelle Cormier. They will spend their entire
third year in Marianna, doing rotations at Jackson Hospital and in other
facilities nearby. They’re the largest Rural Track group yet.
IN THE MEDIA
Guimy Alexis, Class of 2013, spent his three-week Summer Clinical
Practicum with Dr. Larry Deeb – and was featured briefly on WCTV. The
Tallahassee TV station was doing a story on Deeb, a member of our clerkship
faculty.
Zach Folzenlogen, Class of 2013, is an accomplished artist. One
example of his talent was on display in June: He created the cover design
for the issue of Developmental Cell journal based on a manuscript by
Biomedical Sciences faculty member Tim Megraw, which was published in that issue.
Justin Casey, Class of 2011 (Orlando regional campus), was accepted
to do an AMA-sponsored elective with the Discovery Channel from March 28
through April 22, 2011. “This was an extremely competitive process,” the
channel’s chief medical expert wrote to Casey, “with nearly a hundred
applications. The selection committee was impressed with your resume and
personal statement as well as your interest in the communication of health
messages.” Among the objectives of the elective is determining how to create
medical and health programming geared for both physicians and patients in
multiple media outlets.
Dharmini Shah, Class of 2012 (Fort Pierce regional campus), appeared
in a photo with
Dr.
Mario Sanguily, Martin Memorial Health Systems, on
tcpalm.com (Treasure Coast and Palm Beaches). Sanguily figured prominently
in the story, “New surgical procedure clears blocked arteries of plaque
buildup.” The subject was orbital atherectomy, in which doctors insert a
machine like a drill bit into a blocked artery to pulverize hardened plaque
into tiny pieces. Also quoted in the story was Dr. Rene Loyola, St. Lucie
Medical Center.
