LeFRANC AWARDED AAMC SCHOLARSHIP
Noemi
LeFranc,
Class of 2012, has been awarded a Herbert Nickens Medical Student
Scholarship by the Association of American Medical Colleges. In fact, she’s
one of only five students in the country to receive the award.
The AAMC website explains: “These awards consist of five scholarships given
to outstanding students entering their third year of medical school who have
shown leadership in efforts to eliminate inequities in medical education and
health care and have demonstrated leadership efforts in addressing
educational, societal, and health care needs of minorities in the United
States. Each recipient receives a $5,000 scholarship in November of the year
the scholarships are awarded.”
The nomination letter from Dean John Fogarty noted that LeFranc had
organized and developed a highly successful Latino Medical Student
Association Southeast Regional Conference; organized a Hispanic Blood
Pressure Festival; and helped coordinate the Gadsden Health Fair, among
other achievements. “As a leader in [the Association of Latino Medical
Students] since her arrival, she has greatly increased awareness of Latino
issues through cultural activities and leading the organization to its first
ever Organization of the Year award from The Florida State University…,”
the letter stated.
“Besides
her leadership in these many activities, Noemi is an active host for the
admissions committee…. She has also actively published as a student with 2
papers accepted in evidence-based practice as first author.”
