PAGING DR. APP
Francoise Marvel (M.D., ’12), whose “Black Book” has earned much acclaim this year, recently collected a $5,000 grant as well. The Genivia Student Business Grant was awarded by the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship at Florida State’s College of Business for the mobile medical-technology products she developed: the “Madruga and Marvel Medical Black Book” app, book and e-book. “I am thankful to Genivia for their generous funding support of my technology startup, DocTechMD LLC, and their commitment to support technology insights and innovative entrepreneurial students at Florida State,” said Marvel, now a first-year resident at Georgetown University Hospital/Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.

CLINICAL EXCELLENCE

Ashley Lucke (M.D., ’11), a resident at Children’s Medical Center, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, received an Award for Clinical Excellence for her exemplary clinical skills and professional behavior.

RESIDENT OF THE YEAR

Mai Vo (M.D., ’09) was chosen Resident of the Year in Internal Medicine at Orlando Regional Medical Center.

RARE DISCOVERY

Jessica Gondela (M.D., ’12) was the lead author of an article published in the “Zebra Spotting” section of June’s Emergency Physicians Monthly. The headline was “De Garengeot’s Hernia.” An 89-year-old woman presented with appendicitis within a femoral hernia, but pre-operative imaging led to the diagnosis of a rare condition. Her co-authors were clerkship faculty members David Gillis, D.O., and Daniel Glotzer, M.D., from Indian River Medical Center.

PLAY HOST TO A FOURTH-YEAR TRAVELER
Once again we’re approaching that time of year when fourth-year students travel to residency interviews – and when our HOST program can come in handy. So far, 16 alumni have offered to give students a place to stay and lots of advice about the residency program and community where they’re interviewing. If you’d like to be part of this win-win equation, whether you’d be the host or the guest, look over the information and sign up.

CLASS OF ’08 IS FOCUS OF NEXT REUNION
It’s time for the Class of 2008 to start making plans to attend next year’s alumni reunion, where they’ll be the honored guests. Every other College of Medicine and Program in Medical Sciences alum is welcome, too, but this time the Class of ’08 will be king. It’s April 12-13, 2013. Have questions? Willing to help round up classmates? We can help. Email Alumni Affairs Coordinator Alexa Von Staden or call (850) 645-9428.

MEDICAL EDUCATION FOR FLORIDA’S FUTURE
We deeply appreciate the generosity of the College of Medicine’s many friends. Without their financial support, many of the high-quality programs essential to our students’ learning experience would be lost to budget adjustments necessary in today’s financial environment. We extend our profound thanks to the many donors who’ve responded to help support this medical school since it was created in 2000.

If you would like to discuss making a gift in support of the College of Medicine’s vital role preparing new physicians to meet the challenges of Florida’s health-care needs, please contact Wayne Munson, assistant dean for development, 850-644-4389.
