THE BIGGEST BARBECUE/REUNION SO FAR

Roughly 300 students, faculty, staff, friends, alumni and “second look” applicants filled the College of Medicine courtyard April 13 for the fourth annual Spring BBQ/Alumni Reunion.

Among the hundreds attending were Class of 2008 alumni Tanya Evers, Nathanael Hawkins, Charles and Sarah Ritchie, and Amanda Shearer; PIMS alumni Rick Sheridan and Frank Walker; and Class of 2005 alumni Christie Sain and Lorna Stewart.

The day also included a stimulating panel discussion on “Helping Patients and Families Plan for Difficult Medical Choices.” Marshall Kapp, director of the Center for Innovative Collaboration in Medicine and Law, moderated the discussion among Associate Professor Niharika Suchak; Tallahassee Regional Campus Dean Ron Hartsfield; elder-law attorney Victoria Heuler; Executive Support Assistant Cathy Bell, who told of carrying out her mother’s final wishes; and Associate Social Work Professor Jean Munn. Watch the video.

The music was live, the dean grilled up a storm, the kids’ faces were painted and the weather couldn’t have been better.

For next year’s Spring BBQ/Alumni Reunion, everyone will be invited – but the featured guests will be the members of the Class of 2009, who will be celebrating five years since their graduation. How many of you from ’09 want to be involved in encouraging your classmates to attend next April? Please send an email.

ABOUT THE ALUM OF THE YEAR...
You might have read that during the BBQ/Reunion an award would be given out to the Alum of the Year. That ceremony had to be postponed when, as it turned out, the honoree (whose name has not yet been announced) was unable to attend. Watch for upcoming details on the new date for that presentation.

FAREWELL FROM ALEXA
For more than three years, Alexa Von Staden has been the face of alumni relations here at the College of Medicine. She has kept track of alumni’s comings and goings and major milestones; planned dozens of events, including the mammoth 10th-anniversary celebration in 2010; continuously fine-tuned our use of social media; and much more.

Because she was engaged to med student Andy Hogan, we knew Alexa wouldn’t be with us forever – and in late April she stepped down as coordinator of alumni affairs and special events. This summer, she and Andy will be getting married, then heading across the country to his family medicine residency program at the Naval Hospital in Camp Pendleton.

“I’ve gotten to know many of our alumni well,” Alexa said. “I’ve eagerly read their updates about honors they’ve received, fellowships they’ve undertaken, career plans, marriage plans and new babies. I’ll miss that personal connection with them, but I look forward to reading their updates on Twitter, on Facebook, at med.fsu.edu or in FSU MED magazine. As the spouse of an alumnus, I’ll need to practice what I’ve been preaching and update Andy’s profile occasionally. Best wishes to all of our alumni!”

MEDICAL EDUCATION FOR FLORIDA’S FUTURE
We deeply appreciate the generosity of the College of Medicine’s many friends. Without their financial support, many of the high-quality programs essential to our students’ learning experience would be lost to budget adjustments necessary in today’s financial environment. We extend our profound thanks to the many donors who’ve responded to help support this medical school since it was created in 2000. If you would like to discuss making a gift in support of the College of Medicine’s vital role preparing new physicians to meet the challenges of Florida’s health-care needs, please contact Senior Development Officer Pam Wilson, 850-645-0390, or Development Officer Charlie Adams, 850-644-3353.
