Here’s a roundup of some of the biggest stories at the College of Medicine since the end of January, along with links to related web stories or press releases.

A $2 million gift from Florida Hospital in Orlando: It will establish the Florida Hospital Endowed Fund for Medical Education to help support the Orlando Regional Campus’  faculty of more than 550 experienced physicians from the medical community.

A $1 million gift to the Center for Brain Repair: Erwin and Stefanie Jackson’s donation is designed to help boost research efforts to find a cure for dystonia, a neurological disorder that plagued their son.

Clues on the origins of life: Professor Michael Blaber’s protein discoveries, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, could lead to understanding how life emerged on Earth billions of years ago.

One of Florida's greatest: Among the latest class of Great Floridians announced by the governor was our own Dr. Charlotte Maguire.

Happiness increases with age: But your overall level of well-being depends on when you were born, says Assistant Professor Angelina Sutin, whose study has been widely reported.

Making matches for their medical future: On Match Day, March 15, most of our fourth-year students (including the surprised Emily Dodenhoff in this photo) found out where they’ll spend the next three or more years in further medical training.

Impressive lineup of 83 research posters: Growing larger every year, the Research Fair filled the atrium with a wealth of ideas.

More student research on the way: Twenty-three Summer Research Fellowships have been awarded, mostly to students in the Class of 2016.

Another national clinician of the year: This year the American Geriatrics Society named Rosemary Laird, who is one of our clerkship faculty members from Orlando. Last year it was Associate Professor Niharika Suchak from the main campus.

Best librarian on campus: Barbara Shearer, who directs our Charlotte Edwards Maguire Medical Library, has been named Florida State’s Academic Librarian of the Year.

Remembered as one of a kind: Professor Ed Valenstein, who died in March, was “a gentle man and a great role model.”

$25,000 educational boost: Elizabeth Ogunrinde (pictured at right), an undergrad who spends most of her afternoons in our research building, has received a scholarship that goes to only a handful of college juniors nationwide.
 
$700,000 worth of dancing: The students who participated in Dance Marathon at FSU raised a record amount, which will assist our outreach to children in Gadsden County.

Celebration of life sciences: In its third year, FSU’s Life Sciences Symposium offered a rich variety of topics and drew a large crowd to the College of Medicine.
