The FSU College of Medicine and Sarasota Memorial Health Care System received notice Friday of initial accreditation for an emergency medicine residency program. The news was delivered by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Florida's Deputy Secretary for Health
Les Beitsch, chair of the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Social Medicine, has been named Deputy Secretary of Health for the state of Florida, a role in which he previously served for 12 years. Beitsch will continue with his current duties for the College of Medicine while working with the DOH.

It's not a stretch
New research conducted in part by College of Medicine professor Judy Muller-Delp and published in The Journal of Physiology has found that regular calf muscle stretching can preserve older adults' mobility and fight frailty. Regular stretching increases blood flow in the lower leg muscles without the injury risks of other workouts.

According to U.S. News & World Report, the FSU College of Medicine is the third-most selective M.D. program in the country. The average acceptance rate for 2017-18 U.S. and Canadian M.D. programs was seven percent. The College of Medicine was at 2.6 percent, with acceptance offers to 151 of 5,866 applicants.
