As a public health expert, Dr. George Rust will provide an update on various communicable diseases that have impacted our Tallahassee / Big Bend communities. He will put risk in perspective for diseases that can be scary and will highlight the public health role in protecting us. In addition, he will provide practical steps that each of us can take to protect ourselves and our families.

George Rust, M.D., MPH, FAAFP, FACPM
Dr. Rust is a professor at the Florida State University College of Medicine and co-director of the Center for Medicine and Public Health Policy & Practice. He also serves as Medical Director for the Leon County Health Department and for the Florida Department of Health in five surrounding counties.

Board-certified in both family practice and preventive medicine, he arrived in Tallahassee in 2016 from Atlanta’s Morehouse School of Medicine, where he taught for 24 years and was the founding director of the National Center for Primary Care. Dr. Rust began his career as Medical Director for the West Orange Farmworkers Health Association in Central Florida where he served for six years after completing residency training at Cook County Hospital in Chicago.

As a population health outcomes and health equity researcher, he has authored over 120 peer-reviewed publications and has received numerous awards for teaching and service. His upcoming book, titled Healing in a Changing America: Doctoring in a Nation of Needless Suffering, will be published in November.
