We reached out to our alumni in COVID-19 hot spots for a brief glimpse of how their lives have changed. Their words alternately reflect adrenaline, pride, fear and exhaustion.

With COVID-19 making headlines worldwide, the College of Medicine’s students, professors and alumni have contributed to numerous news stories, both locally and nationally.

In 2017, a leukemia diagnosis forced third-year student Cody Canavan to put med school on hold. Now, he’s on track to return with the Class of 2022.

Professor of Geriatrics Antonio Terracciano was named a Fulbright Scholar and, if conditions allow, will soon be headed overseas to live, study, conduct research and teach at the University of Jyväskylä for five months.

While working as an oncology resident in Malawi, Ph.D. student Dingani Nkosi saw the devastating effect Africa’s HIV/AIDS epidemic had on patient prognoses. He’s hoping his recent match into a pathology residency program will help him improve disease diagnostics – and patient outcomes.

Researcher Pradeep Bhide is studying the risk of nicotine exposure causing neurodevelopmental effects that are transmitted to future generations. He was awarded a $627,000 grant from the Florida Department of Health.
